Hon. Speaker and MCAs attends Kitui Agricultural show
The County Assembly Speaker Hon. Kevin Kinengo Katisya has called on the Kitui farmers to embrace new farming technologies in a bid address food insecurity in the County. Speaking today during the official opening of the Kitui Agricultural Show and Trade Fair, 2023 at Ithookwe Showground, Speaker Kinengo challenged Kitui farmers to invest in modern ways of farming geared towards resolving the perennial problems that hinder agricultural and livestock production in Kitui County. ‘’I strongly advocate for a transition from rain-fed agriculture to irrigated agriculture, as this shift will significantly boost food production in our county’’, reiterated Hon. Kinengo.
The Speaker further assured Kitui farmers that the County Assembly is fully committed to serve them through coming up with policies and laws that promotes the growth of agricultural sector. Equally, the Speaker made it clear that the County Assembly approved over Kshs. 800 million for the ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in 2023-2024 budget to enable the ministry implement critical programmes that will improve agricultural production across the County.
The Agricultural show themed ‘’promoting climate smart agriculture and trade initiatives for sustainable food and nutrition security and economic growth’’, was officially opened today by Kitui Governor, H.E Dr. Julius Makau Malombe.
On his part, Governor Malombe underscored his commitment to deliver his promise to the people of Kitui. ‘’Kitui is blessed to have two biggest rivers in this country which we can properly utilize through irrigation to boost food production in our county’’, said Governor Malombe.
The event which brought together hundreds of exhibitors drawn from various sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, housing, small and medium enterprises, banking, public and private institutions, hospitality, education and development partners was also attended by the Kitui County Deputy Governor H.E Augustine Wambua Kanani, Kitui County MP Hon. Irene Kasalu, Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, Mwingi West MP Hon. Charles Ngusya Nguna, Mwingi North MP Hon. Paul Musyimi Nzengu, Kitui County Commissioner Mr. Erastus Mbui, over 30 Members of the County Assembly of Kitui, CECMs, Chief Officers and other senior County Government officials.
